This is my second time making applesauce in the crockpot and I’m hooked. Why would I ever want store bought apple sauce again? Not only is it totally delicious and free from any preservatives and other nasty ingredients it makes the whole house smell Heavenly!
Core and peel 12 -15 decent sized apples. The first time I used Granny Smith and Pink Lady and the sauce was just a tad tart. Delicious, but not perfect. This time I used Pink Lady and Gala and was really pleased with the flavor.
Add 1 & 1/4 cups of water
I LOVE cinnamon, so, I used a tbsp + a little more, my sauce is a dark color because of it, and oh so tasty. You could definitely go lighter on the cinnamon, but, why? I also love nutmeg, so, it got 1/2 a tsp.
1 tsp. pure vanilla
Add a pinch of sea salt – confused on that whole pinch business? Shake a little in the palm of your hand, it shouldn’t be bigger around than the tip of your index finger. Aprox. 1/16 tsp.
Cover and let it go aprox. 6 hours on low. Open the windows and taunt the neighbors with the fantastic smell. Drool a little.
After about 5.5 hours try a little mash with a fork, if it smashes easily, you’re good to go, otherwise, give it a bit. I use a potato masher. I like mine a bit chunky, but, you could keep on mashing to smooth if you like. If it’s a bit to liquidy, keep the pot on awhile longer and let the liquid cook off.
13 apples gave me 32 oz of applesauce. Perhaps next time I’ll peel enough for more!
